This redbud variety is the best one for holding its reddish purple leaf colour all summer. It has upright arching branches which cradle small but intensely coloured pink flowers in spring before its leaves emerge. Cool one. It does need a porous soil to grow in so don't try to stuff it in clay, a little work preparing a spot for these is worth it.
Cold Hardiness - This ornamental tree is good for temperatures down to -25C (Zone 5b). Sizing - Merlot is a small tree growing almost as wide as tall when it's older. Should top out at 12' tall.
Location - 25% shade to 75% shade, so not full sun, it likes protection from harsh winds, doesn't like wet feet.
