Hydrangea paniculata 'Phantom'
Features and Where to use
We are not quite sure why this variety is called Phantom, other than a ghost's association with being white, because this plant is no apparition!! It comes out to be seen for long periods of time unlike flighty spirits. Phantom is a strong grower, prune it late winter, and watch it climb up and reach its pinnacle of showing off in mid-late summer. They add pink to its colour pallet in late summer/fall. In winter the dried flowers can be an attractive landscape feature as well.
Growth Details
Cold Hardiness - Hardy in temperatures down to -34C. Sizing - 8' tall is its maximum height, we have a local row of Phantoms that is pruned back to 20-24" every year in March and it grows up to perfectly flowering 5-6' plants summer after summer. Location - Full sun to 50% shade (less blooms in shade), moist to dry conditions, wind hardy.
